LOGIN Agenda Highlights

On the eve of All Fool's Day and with little more than a month to go before the 2009 LOGIN Conference kicks off, we've unveiled the official conference schedule. Featured below are a few surprises and highlights for this year's conference:

  • Guess which of these highlights are real!In order to allow more time for morning lectures, speed networking breakfasts will now begin at 4am, expedited by energy drinks and cattle prods to encourage frequent table-changing and prevent certain participants from drifting off to sleep (you know who you are).
  • LOGIN will host its official conference party at a beachside resort club in Cabo San Lucas, featuring mariachi bands, margaritas served in coconut shells and fire dancers. Buses will be available after the last session on Wednesday.
  • A special guest speaker will be discussing the topic of cloud computing for online game servers using a network of abacuses. Attendees will be encouraged to sit near the back of the room, as a working model will be demonstrated.
  • Despite the global recession, LOGIN will continue to have sit-down keynote lunches. Meals, however, will now be limited to Oscar Meyer Lunchables®

Or for the real deal, we give you the full schedule for the 2009 LOGIN Conference, covering the serious sessions, events and features you won’t want to miss packed between Monday, May 11th and the end of the day on Thursday, May 14th.

Tuesday, March 31st, is also the final day to take advantage of early-bird registration rates for LOGIN 2009. For the outrageously low price of $595, you can participate in three days filled with lectures, keynotes, panels, roundtables, sit-down lunches, receptions, parties, and even speed networking breakfasts. Don't wait until Wednesday to realize you missed out on one of the best deals of the year on the most exclusive, influential online game industry conferences you’ll find.

No fooling.

Jesse Schell to Enlighten LOGIN With Thursday Keynote

Jesse SchellEvergreen Events is delighted to announce the Thursday, May 14th keynote speaker for the 2009 LOGIN Conference. Jesse Schell, the accomplished Professor of Entertainment Technology at Carnegie Mellon University and CEO of Schell Games, will be delivering a lunch keynote address explaining the complicated relationship between interactive entertainment, violence, culture and sociology. The 2009 LOGIN Conference will be held May 11th-14th 2009 in Seattle, Washington at the fantastic Seattle Marriott Waterfront Hotel, as an innovative event designed to facilitate education, networking, and entertainment for the leaders of the business and development online game industry.

In his keynote, "Make Games Not War", Mr. Schell will discuss how "it is very possible that widespread online games are changing people, and therefore, society, in subtle ways. But how? Will the constant playing of war games train us all to be killers, or will the cooperation these games require break down cultural barriers, and teach us to get along with strangers? Or both? This talk examines the paradoxical futures that online gaming may bring us, and makes some suggestions about how to use them to save humanity from itself."

"Jesse Schell represents the kind of unique voice we enjoy bringing to attendees at LOGIN. He has one foot set in academia and another set in game development, a mix of experience that keeps his point of view fresh and ahead of the curve. We have no doubt this keynote address will be remembered for years to come as a high standard in excellence and insight," proclaimed Cynthia Freese, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Evergreen Events.

Gaming Data That Makes a Difference:
Interview with the CGA's Jessica Tams

Jessica Tams, Managing Director at the Casual Games Association, chats with LOGIN Beat about the emergence of casual gaming as one of the dominant forms of online entertainment, its business models, its markets and how all online game developers need to stay focused on the data that matters.

Paul PhileoPAUL PHILLEO: Jessica, we appreciate you offering to be interviewed for this issue of LOGIN Beat. In the casual games industry you’re well-known, but for those who might not be familiar with you, can you tell us a little about your background?

Jessica TamsJESSICA TAMS: I relocated from Utah to Seattle in the Fall of 1997 to enter the Physics PhD program at the University of Washington. After realizing I would be in school or post-docs for 8 more years, my motivations shifted to a job outside of academia. I got my start in the video game industry in 1999 at Sierra Online in Bellevue, Washington working on Gabriel Knight III. I spent the next 5 years as a programmer followed by 5 years in production and business development at companies such as Gas Powered Games, Trymedia and Oberon Media.

There are a vast number of business models, including “freemium”, subscriptions, microtransactions and others, and numerous hybrid variations of these. What business models show the most promise for online games, both casual and “hardcore”?

Wow, another new word: freemium. There are many ways to make money in the wide world of video games – and all of them have their advantages and disadvantages. It is up to each individual company to decide which business model is the best fit for their expertise, their product and their consumer.

"business and transaction models are mainly driven by regional standards"One thing everyone needs to realize is that once consumers get comfortable with a specific transaction model, they will be more comfortable returning to it time and time again. So while we might be hearing about new monetization methods and how one group here and one group there might be making money in a new and exciting way, they are not going to become the gold standard for some time. Our research shows business and transaction models are mainly driven by regional standards and it has been very difficult for companies to offer business and transaction models favored by say Russia to consumers in the USA.

There isn’t enough room here to go over all the different business and transaction models here, but we cover all the different business models in our research report which we will go over during my LOGIN talk ;)

Gazillion Entertainment CEO on Marvel MMO game projects

According to Rob Hutter, CEO and president of Gazillion Entertainment, the best way to combat Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft, the Goliath of the massively multiplayer online (MMO) game business, is to think bigger. The new privately-held MMO game publisher, based in San Mateo, CA, is focusing on the large untapped mainstream audience that Nintendo has captured with its now-ubiquitous Wii console. Although Gazillion is developing a trio of original mass market MMOs, none of which have been revealed yet, its first two big licensing deals are with Marvel Entertainment and LEGO. »

Rebel Monkey launches CampFu casual online game world with co-op play

Rebel Monkey has launched its CampFu online game world for teens. The New York company hopes to distinguish itself from a bunch of rivals with its cooperative style of game play. As many as four players can join together to play the four different mini games included in the CampFu world, said Margaret Wallace, chief executive of Rebel Monkey. The company spent more than 18 months creating the Monkey Wrench game platform for CampFu. The world is targeting teens who can enjoy the semi-freedom of summer camp life. They create their own avatar, or virtual character and can play martial arts games, hang out in camp common areas, and chat. It’s a casual game, not a hardcore title, but players can keep coming back to play the same character, as in other massively multiplayer online games. »

MindArk gets real-world banking license

With banks around the world foundering, the idea of moving your bank account to another planet might have some appeal. Interstellar banking isn't here yet, but at least you can pretend. The publisher of the online science-fiction game "Entropia Universe," set on the planet Calypso, received a banking license from the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority last week and plans to open a real bank within a year, albeit one without physical, walk-in branches. Players of "Entropia" already exchange real money for a virtual currency that is used for their expenses on Calypso. And virtual money they make in the game, through hunting, mining, trading or other activities, can be cashed out into real money. The virtual currency, Project Entropia Dollars, has a fixed 10-to-1 exchange rate to the U.S. dollar. »
