LOGIN Opens Early Registration

cutting

This is the day many of you have been waiting for — the day we open the doors for early registration to attend the 2011 LOGIN Conference. This is your window of opportunity to experience this exclusive online game industry event at the best possible price. Don't delay as we are expecting to sell out early this year, and early registration prices are only good until April 4. The basic attendee pass gets you into all of the sessions, panels, keynotes, the expo area, and official party functions.

Whenever I talk to in-the-trenches developers — the programmer writing the server code, the designer creating a virtual economy, the small scrum team lead — they all tell me the same thing: "My company won't or can't send me to conferences; if I want to go, I need to pay my own way."

Personal budgets are often of an entirely different scale than corporate budgets, and that's why we offer multiple levels of passes to LOGIN. For the next two weeks, developers can register for LOGIN for $395. That's more than two full days of sessions, keynotes, and networking lunches for less than $200 a day (and less than our great price last year). I think you'll find it makes a compelling economic argument for even the most budget-conscious developer.

We think we've got something for every budget. Check out the conference registration page, or click the pretty button below for all the details.

Don't forget to check out some of the highlights from this year's session lineup to see what our speakers have to offer:

Richard Garriott Announced as Opening Keynote

garriott

Evergreen Events is delighted to announce that Richard Garriott, creative director of Portalarium, will be the opening keynote speaker for the 2011 LOGIN Conference on May 17, 2011. One of the gaming world's legendary designers, Garriott earned that status with his design of the Ultima role-playing games, one of the most successful computer game series ever. Ultima Online was the world's first commercially successful massively multiplayer online role-playing game. Richard will talk about how the new era of online social games can benefit from reflection about the two grand eras that came before. Single-player games ruled in the 1980s and 1990s; MMOs ruled in the 2000s.

"We are now in a new era of gaming, defined by cheap or free-to-play, virally spread, casually begun gameplay," Garriott said. "Each era has grown the market by 10 times! What lessons of history are useful? What truly new challenges await us? What will casual online games look like in five years?"

Richard asserts that if you are not trying to solve this problem, you will be left behind.

"Richard is truly a visionary, not only in game development, but also in his goal for opening up space exploration to private citizens," stated Peter Freese, LOGIN conference director. "I can't think of a more fitting and inspiring speaker to commemorate LOGIN's fifth annual conference. I'm thrilled to have him as our first keynote and can't wait to hear what insight and anecdotes he shares with attendees."

Blizzard Is a Member of the Star Wars: The Old Republic Fan Club

Blizzard has tipped its hat in recognition to Electronic Arts/BioWare for Star Wars: The Old Republic. Frank Pearce, Blizzard's executive VP and co-founder, and Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime said they felt that because of the quality of the license and BioWare as a developer, the game might expand the audience for massively multiplayer online games. It's not long before we find out if that is in fact the outcome: Star Wars: The Old Republic is scheduled for launch in the second quarter of this year.

Valve Gives Ad Agencies Thumbs Down

Valve's Doug Lombardi, VP of Marketing, expressed profound disappointment in the value propositions ad agencies provided the company when pitching to handle the Portal 2 account. Lombardi described third-party agency value propositions as cliche, copycat, and disconnected — "close to worthless," he said. Valve has been addressing all advertisement in-house for Portal 2. Portal 2 will launch April 21 through Valve to PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. Electronic Arts will be handling the retail distribution of the title.
